Arbutin

    💚Good

    What it is

A naturally occurring glycoside extracted from plants like bearberry, pear, and wheat. It is used for its skin-lightening properties.

    How it works

Similar to Alpha-Arbutin, Beta-Arbutin inhibits the activity of the tyrosinase enzyme, hindering the melanin production process. It is generally considered less effective and less stable than its alpha-isomer.

    Benefits

    • Helps to fade brown spots and hyperpigmentation.
    • Contributes to a more even skin tone.
    • Provides antioxidant benefits.

    Pairs well with

    Vitamin C, Kojic Acid

    Formulation notes

    Effective concentration: 1% - 7%

    pH range: 3.5 - 6.5

Stability: Less stable than Alpha-Arbutin, can degrade in alkaline conditions.

    Safety

    Irritancy: Low

    Comedogenicity: 0

Warnings: Can release small amounts of hydroquinone upon degradation, though generally considered safe in cosmetics.
